The UK Armed Forces Wheelchair Rugby League team is preparing for one of its biggest challenges yet, a historic clash against Wales on Saturday, November 22, at the Allam Sports Centre in Hull (kick-off 2 pm). This fixture is more than just a game; it’s a celebration of resilience, camaraderie, and the growing impact of wheelchair rugby league within the Armed Forces community.
Formed earlier this year, the UKAF Wheelchair RL side brings together players from the Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force, creating a squad that is not only strong on the pitch but deeply connected off it. For many of these players, injured veterans and serving personnel alike, wheelchair rugby league is more than a sport; it’s a lifeline.
Player-Manager and Captain Steve Sampher explained:
"This sport gives us a chance to come together as injured veterans and serving personnel, to share experiences, support each other, and rediscover the camaraderie we all miss. Rugby league is tough, fast, and exciting, but it’s also about belonging—about finding people who understand your struggles and share your passion."
Wheelchair rugby league has become a powerful tool for rehabilitation and mental well-being, offering veterans a way to stay active, compete at a high level, and form lasting friendships that extend beyond the court. Every training session and fixture strengthens those bonds.
Since its launch, the UKAF team has already made waves, defeating England Universities Wheelchair RL at their inaugural event and drawing 42-all with a strong South-East England select side. Now, the focus shifts to Wales, a team that has already qualified for the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup and will use this match as key preparation for their Celtic Cup campaign.
Last year, a then-Army side narrowly lost 34-24 to Wales. This time, with all three services represented, UKAF is stronger, more diverse, and determined to reverse that result.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for us to measure ourselves against one of the best sides in the world," said Sampher. "We’re not just playing games; we’re creating opportunities. This is about inspiring more people to get involved, whether they’re serving personnel, veterans, or supporters of the sport."

"We’re building something special," added Sampher. "This is about sport, yes, but it’s also about recovery, resilience, and community. Every time we play, we show what’s possible."
